Graphic design, design software and the industry in general have a long history in the industry.
For those unfamiliar, graphic design is the process of drawing on paper with a pencil or markers, creating something visually striking and compelling.
The concept is not new, however, and is one that’s come to a much greater level of prominence with the growth of digital technologies.
For many, graphic designers have become an integral part of the workplace, often being part of a team of designers that have to ensure that their designs work in real time.
In recent years, the art of design has moved beyond the traditional “graphic design” to encompass more digital design, and for designers, it’s been a challenge.
“The most common complaint about designers is that they are so used to drawing in digital, they can’t work with the physical, traditional tools they are used to using,” says Jennifer Smith, design manager at Design Center, a graphic design firm based in Washington, D.C. It’s not just that there is a lack of familiarity with digital tools, but also the lack of support for digital designers and designers who struggle to adapt to the new realities of the job.
To address the latter, Smith and her team of graphic designers are now launching a training program called the Visual Design Academy to help designers learn how to design in the digital era.
The training is being taught in the new Visual Design Center at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), a private, nonprofit institution in New York City.
The training program is being offered by the Graphic Design Academy, an organization dedicated to bringing graphic designers, designers and developers together to help each other succeed in the creative industries.
As one of the founding members of the Visual Art Academy, Smith hopes the new program will help to educate designers about how digital tools can be used in a variety of creative areas, including film, design, architecture, and architecture and planning.
While the training itself will be free, the program will also be offered through a subscription.
According to Smith, the Visual Education Academy will help designers understand the limitations of digital tools when it comes to design, as well as the challenges that designers face when designing with digital.
Smith says the training is aimed at designers who want to get a better understanding of digital workflows, and are looking to learn how digital can be more flexible than traditional design tools.
When the training begins, Smith says she hopes that more designers will take the time to learn the basics of how digital works and how it can be useful to their jobs.
