The perfect time for graphic design interns to apply to internships is the beginning of each quarter, said Nick Tully, the director of research and development at the National Association of Graphic Design Interns, which represents the most competitive and high-profile internships.
The group has put out a hiring call for new graphic design and digital media interns, which says that the average intern should start in mid-June.
The average intern spends about one-quarter of the time in-person learning the craft, and the average duration of their internship is three months.
The organization says that if you are a student, intern or a student with a specific job title, you should apply now.
“The internships are the first step in a graphic designer’s career,” Tully said.
“If you’re looking to build your portfolio or your network, this is where you want to be.”
Tully’s group is also looking at internships for web designers, copywriters and design studios.
But while it’s still a long shot for interns to land a gig at a big media company, there are opportunities for a growing number of designers.
In fact, Tully believes that the number of new internships will increase significantly over the next few years.
“In 2018, we’re likely to see about 25 percent of all interns start in the second quarter,” he said.
That’s when interns start to apply.
A lot of people want to get their first internship but can’t afford to apply right away, said Jessica Schaffer, the executive director of the Digital Media & Content Association, which advocates for digital media content.
It’s a situation that’s particularly ripe for a creative-related internship.
“It’s a great time to start your career as a digital media intern,” Schaffer said.
Internships are a great way to build the skills that you need to get a job.
“You’re not spending all of your time on Photoshop and doing little bit of design work,” she said.
But there are some drawbacks to interning at big media companies, like being expected to learn to use technology, and that can be an obstacle for those who want to pursue their careers in the field.
In an effort to make it easier for aspiring designers to get into these types of internships, the National Media & Entertainment Association launched a website that lists the internships available for each media and entertainment industry, including TV, film and music.
In the past, interns were expected to attend conferences to learn about industry trends and how they can better compete in the industry.
But in the last few years, the NMEA has increased its focus on the development of interns for the entertainment industry.
The NMEAA says that they’ve also created a guide for prospective interns that focuses on what to expect from an internship at a media company.
“We want you to have a real sense of how much you’re expected to work with,” Schaser said.
And as a part of that process, interns will have to attend interviews.
The company also offers training programs that focus on working with creatives.
For example, interns get to choose the content they work on and are asked to work on a project with a different writer or editor on the team, according to the NmeaA website.
The program is meant to give interns an idea of how they would interact with the company’s creative staff.
Tully and Schaffer are confident that the future of digital media will look very different in the next five to 10 years.
And even if you’re not interested in the design or graphic design field, you can still get involved in the arts.
“I think it’s going to continue to grow, and it’s not just about technology anymore,” Scharer said.
