Graphic designers are a rare breed in tech, and they’re often asked to do a few things that don’t necessarily need to be on their résumés.
And while there’s nothing wrong with that, they’re also expected to do the right things at the right time.
We asked a bunch of students about what to expect when they’re offered a graphic designer internship, and what to look out for when it comes to what they’re expected to put into their portfolio.

What is an internship?
Internships are basically short-term, paid positions in an organization.
These positions typically last two to three months and are usually for the sole purpose of learning about a specific technology.
Internships are typically held by the company itself or by an agency.
Internships vary widely across industries, but it’s generally considered a good idea to find one that will allow you to gain experience in a variety of areas.
If you don’t have experience in the field you’ll have a harder time finding one that fits your specific needs.
Internship opportunities typically start with a call for applicants to submit an application and cover letter.
This is where you list your professional experience, work experience, and skills in order to gain a bit more exposure.
You may be asked to provide a portfolio of work you’ve done, as well as some feedback on your work.
There’s usually a bit of homework involved, and if you’re unsure about how to answer some questions, it may be helpful to contact an experienced professional for help.
After an initial phone call, you may be sent an email or a text message asking you to answer a series of questions that may be a little more detailed.
The answers may include a brief explanation of your position, your current job duties, and how you’ll be working with the team.
If the email is short, it’s a good time to answer questions on your personal website.
Once you’ve answered the questions, you’ll get a list of questions to ask them about your experience, skills, and work history.
Once you’ve been given the chance to answer all the questions that the recruiter asks you, you’re probably about to get your first day on the job.
The recruiter will typically take a few minutes to meet you in person.
Some internships will offer you a “virtual interview” and some may not.
You’re also likely to have to sign a confidentiality agreement that may also give you some protections against retaliation.
Some interns may be offered other jobs while in school, while others may work for a company that’s a part of the Google parent company.
In some cases, you might even be given a choice of different jobs based on your previous experience.
If that’s the case, you will likely be given an internship that matches your needs.
In some cases you’ll also get a chance to work on your portfolio in order for you to see if your skills fit the role.
“If you’re a designer, you probably know what you want to do, but what you’re usually best at is getting your portfolio to look good,” says Rennill.
In other cases, it might be better to start with an initial portfolio of one of your favourite projects.
In that case, it could be an area that you’re already well-versed in.
“There are a lot of different types of people, but a lot are going to fall into the ‘designer’ or ‘programmer’ category,” says Sarah Babbitt, an intern with design firm Lush.
“That’s a really great way to get experience that you might not have in a more traditional career.”
If you’ve already worked on a project before, you can usually expect to get to work with other designers on the same project.
In this case, the job may involve working with an existing design team.
If you have some design experience in your past, you could get to do some design work for the team as well.
The process might be more structured than a traditional internship.
“There are some really good things that you can do for your team that are really specific to design, so it’s not really about your portfolio,” says Babbett.
“The team gets to work from their own perspective, and I think that’s really important to understand.”
